Life in the long grass - bugs, beetles & butterflies discovery

Can you imagine a warm summer's day with the bees buzzing around you as you slow down and take a closer look at the small creatures living beneath your feet. Then get involved and join other like-minded people in the Downs community for an immersive invertebrate hunt in the spectacular long grass!

Along the way, we'll learn simple survey techniques such as sweep-netting and bush shaking from our entomology expert, Ray Barnett, and discover how to identify the beetles, bugs, butterflies and spiders that call the stunning wildflower meadow home. Ray (Bristol Museum's entomology lead) will draw on 50 years of knowledge to guide us on why our smallest Downs inhabitants are so vital to preserve this most ancient of habitats and why joining in with our hunt helps the Downs!
