This is the fifth annual programme of general steam in the Ivo Peters Collection – branch and main line British Railways followed by a look at the industrial steam scene in 1964.

In the first half of the programme, we visit the Tetbury/Cirencester branches, the North Somerset line and other branch lines to the south and east of Bath; also Light Pacifics at Honiton tunnel, a Grange on a summer Saturday, “City of Nottingham” on a special, and a return to the Hemyock branch. This is followed by industrial steam very much at work in the ironstone industry, as well as “George” at British Celanese, Spondon, and the three locomotives working for the British Sugar Corporation at Wissington.

Ivo Peters first visited the Isle of Man in 1962 (see Volume Nine). In 1963 he spent the first week in July on the island, when he filmed and photographed both the north and south lines out of Douglas.

The DVD looks at the general daily maintenance of the locomotives, along with the sorting of stock for the day’s running. We then travel the southern line towards Port Erin, followed by the northern route, first to St Johns and then on towards Peel and Ramsey. Ivo filmed at most of the stations as well as many locations between, including the two viaducts on the Ramsey line and ‘the race’ out of St Johns, with his customary unerring eye for a beautiful setting.

‘Eastleigh Works’ is one of a series of 12 books being released in 2025 showcasing railway works and centres to commemorate ‘Railway 200’. Eastleigh owes its origins as a railway town and was for many years the principal employer in the area with both a locomotive and a separate carriage works.

Although both were amalgamated into one site many years ago, and despite under serious threat of complete closure, the former locomotive works has not only survived but now thrives as an independent workshop repairing and maintaining locomotives and rolling stock that might otherwise be found working almost anywhere in the country.
