    Britain’s railways were developed primarily to move freight and over time, a wide range of wagons were developed to suit the varied cargo that the railway companies had been contracted to transport. Among them were short wheelbase, 3 plank open wagons which had hinged sides allowing them to be lowered, aiding the loading and unloading of cargo. The goods carried by such wagons was varied and could range from loose loads like minerals and aggregate to crates, barrels and even single pieces of machinery or equipment. Basically, anything that could tolerate being exposed to the elements could be carried, although loads could also be sheeted if necessary to offer some protection from weather and general railway dirt.

    The Ffestiniog Railway, located in North Wales, is the world’s oldest surviving independent railway company, founded in 1832. Originally built to transport slate from the quarries of Blaenau Ffestiniog to the port at Porthmadog, it was engineered with a unique narrow gauge of just 1 ft 11½ in (597 mm), ideal for winding through the rugged Snowdonia landscape. Innovative features included gravity-powered slate trains running downhill and horses hauling the wagons back uphill.

    Tony Richardson was brought up a few miles from Shillingstone station on the S&D and took over 500 photographs of the Somerset & Dorset line from 1956 into the early ’60s. Shot mainly on medium format film, his images were always perfectly exposed and provide a high resolution record of this iconic cross-country line.
