Peter and Grandpa have built a minitaure steam railway across Grandpa's farm. Originally it just ran between their houses, but now it links two villages and even takes the children to school. They have had many adventures on the line, but this one takes place on a family holiday in Scotland. The train crash which they investigate really happened and you can go and visit the site to see exactly what they saw. You might even find some more rivets under the bridge.... The Ordnance Survey grid reference for the point of collision is NO 685 519. Just don't trespass on railway property, it is dangerous.

Peter and Grandpa's miniature railway runs between their houses. They use it to visit each other and have had many adventures. The steam locomotive, Fiery Fox, is a wonderful machine, but takes ages to get ready. In this book an unexpected gift from an old lady comes in very handy. You may think that melting metal in a home workshop is far-fetched. Far from it. Grandpa Gerald, on whom these stories are based, built a mini foundary in a barn which could melt iron. His locomotive, 'Invicta', was built using home made castings. You can see him driving it in Peter's Railway and the Forgotten Engine.

Most of the books are set in summertime when there are long, hot days, perfect for adventures on the little railway across the farm. However, the railway is there all year round, even if it isn't being used every day. This book tells the story of life on the railway through one year, from winter to autumn. With all sorts of different activities and fun, each season brings its own character and rhythm of life. Winter is a time for indoor construction projects. In spring, as it gets warmer, Grandpa and the children are outside preparing the railway for the summer. Then follows autumn: Now what could three children with a small steam train possibly get up to in autumn?....

Peter and Grandpa's little steam railway originally ran across the farm between their houses and the village of Yockletts. But recently, (Peter's Railway Hits the Jackpot, Book 5), they have extended the railway, by five miles, to Oaksted village. The new line includes a bridge over the River Wye and a long and curving tunnel under Gorse Hill, not far from Peter's house.
